Job Description

Finance & Payroll Assistant

York

£27,000 - £30,000

NJR Recruitment is delighted to be supporting a well-established and growing organisation in York in their search for a Finance & Payroll Assistant to join their collaborative finance team.

This is a varied and responsible opportunity within a supportive, smaller business environment, offering broad exposure across financial reporting, planning, payroll and core finance operations. The role will suit someone who enjoys taking ownership and wants to develop into a well-rounded finance professional rather than being confined to purely transactional duties.

Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will support reporting across two FCA-regulated entities and play a key role in ensuring the smooth and accurate delivery of finance processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support financial reporting across two FCA-regulated entities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Assist with month-end, quarterly and year-end processes
  • Maintain strong financial controls through journal postings and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Reconcile income streams and work-in-progress schedules, investigating discrepancies
  • Contribute to financial planning activities and performance monitoring
  • Collaborate with HR and an outsourced payroll provider to ensure accurate payroll processing
  • Take ownership of payroll change submissions, journals, holiday accrual maintenance and reconciliations to Sage 200
  • Provide professional and discreet support for employee payroll queries
  • Liaise with auditors and support compliance requirements
  • Support and mentor a finance apprentice
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and improve finance processes

About You

We are seeking a proactive and dependable finance professional who takes pride in delivering accurate work and meeting deadlines.

Skills & Experience:

  • Payroll and accounting experience (AAT Level 4, or working towards, preferred)
  • Strong Excel skills including Pivot Tables, SUMIF and VLOOKUP
  • Highly organised with strong prioritisation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Integrity and professionalism when handling confidential information
  • Confident taking ownership of responsibilities
  • Clear communicator with a collaborative approach

The Ideal Person Will:

  • Be naturally reliable and accountable
  • Feel comfortable being trusted with responsibility
  • Take initiative and adopt a solutions-focused mindset
  • Enjoy broad exposure across finance functions
  • Value working within a professional, supportive environment

What's in it for you?

  • Great basic salary
  • Hybrid working
  • Full study support towards qualifications
  • 21 Days Holiday + Bank Holidays plus extra days for service
  • Death in Service cover
  • Private Health Insurance
  • Share incentives
  • Flexible hours

This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking a broad, hands-on finance role within a stable and professional organisation, offering long-term development and genuine involvement in the finance function.
