Job Description Job Purpose

This is a newly created position reporting to our Human Resources Director. We are looking to appoint an expereinced Environmental & Sustainability Manager to provide expertise and proactive guidance to our UK and Ireland business. The jobholder will provide strategic direction to our organisation to promote, develop and establish a positive environmental and sustainability focus whilst ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice.

Main Accountabilities

Support and constructively challenge leaders to continually improve environmental and sustainability management.

Drive the environmental and sustainability strategy for the business to meet local and corporate goals. Identify, set and review performance metrics and objectives based on appropriate measurement standards aligned to internal and external benchmarks, in order to continually assess and address the status of environmental management.

Ensure business compliance and adherence to relevant environmental standards and legislation is maintained. Ensure reporting compliance is maintained as required for ESOS, SECR and Carbon Footprint. Ensure the carbon reduction plans are updated annually and in alignment with our carbon reduction plans to achieve global and local targets.

Ensure environmental risk assessments are in place to identify and mitigate risk through advising management as appropriate to drive a high standard of compliance and ensure adherence to ISO14001.

Review and update the NHS Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment submission annually and set objectives to attain continuous improvement and progress our maturity level.

Support the business in new tender submissions in line with NHS requirements defined in PPN06/21 and provide guidance in relation to environment and sustainability objectives.

Review existing and upcoming relevant legislation and ensure that the business has appropriate systems, policies and practices in place so that we remain compliant from a legal, internal and external audit perspective.

Champion and promote ‘doing the right thing’ in respect of our environment. Ensuring that our policies and activities are communicated and understood by providing advice, guidance to all relevant stakeholders.

Establish and maintain close working relationships with key stakeholders (e.g. HR, Legal Counsel, Finance and Operational teams and third parties (auditors, consultants)) to support effective delivery of environment priorities against the business plan and to achieve practical and cost-effective compliance with all relevant legislation.

Experience

Environmental science and sustainability degree would be advantageous (or equivalent relevant certification).
Likely to be a Member of IEMA (or equivalent) and a Chartered Environmentalist of the Society for the Environment or working towards Chartered status
Previous experience gained in a senior environmental management role in a large multinational organisation.
A knowledge and understanding of the environment challenges faced by a diverse organisation (e.g. manufacturing, warehouse, field based, nursing, office-based employees) working across a range of different activities.
Will have a high level of gravitas and engagement in order to deliver work in a considered, strategic and enthusiastic way.
Experience of working with the Republic of Ireland is desirable but not essential.
