Leeds
Salary up to £70k plus Car/Allowance

Established over 40 years ago, my client has evolved into the largest and leading subcontractor for tunnelling in the United Kingdom and have also expanded their operations internationally, particularly in the Middle East. Their construction capabilities range from traditional hand tunnelling techniques to innovative methods employed in large-scale projects like Crossrail and Themes Tideway and in addition to underground construction they have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality above ground structures for residential developments, specialising in low to high rise concrete frames.

Due to an increase in workload, they are looking at add a Principal Design Engineer to their busy Leeds office

As a Principal Engineer, you will lead, manage, develop and mentor the team of Engineers and Technicians and assist with professional development. You will be expected to manage the deliverables of the team to tight programme deadlines and appropriate standards and ensure designs are produced to industry standards and codes and are checked and approved in line with company quality procedures, but can equally apply ingenuity to produce designs out of bounds of standard code of practice.

As well as being able to apply Temporary Works design principles in accordance with relevant standards, you will apply permanent works design standards, producing design solutions in both timber, steel, reinforced concrete and of proprietary structural systems.

You will be experienced in shaft design, including buoyant stability, jacking collars, reinforced concrete bases, tremie plugs, cover slabs opening support structures, and all the ancillary associated Temporary Works structures. As well as a detailed understanding of tunnel designs for Timber Headings, Microtunnelling/Pipejacking, thrust walls, head walls, launch frames, pipeline proof loads, you will be have an in depth knowledge of excavation Stability and support, with a thorough understanding of geotechnical principals for shoring techniques and design of sheet piles & frames, PC modular units, king post etc. You will also have a firm grasp of earth work stability slope stability analysis, soil nailing, concrete formwork, crane platforms and ground settlement analysis, from tunnelling and excavations.

You will liaise with clients and the project construction teams to understand requirements and ensure design solutions are delivered accordingly, co-ordinate external consultants and third-party checkers and produce reports and communications for clients, including items for statutory authorities' design approvals, such as Network Rail and Highways England. You will be required to lead NR and HE design approval process and liaise with the wider internal team in development of the engineering and contribute to business development activity and aid tender bids when required.

Possessing a minimum of 10 years' experience in designing underground structures and tunnelling Temporary Works and experience of working in a UK design consultancy environment, you will have strong team leadership capabilities, supporting, mentoring and developing junior engineers. You will have a proven high level of technical skill and competence in structural design skills and a sound geotechnical grounding. Experience of undertaking the Network Rail CRE role as well as the equivalent responsible engineering role for Highways schemes is beneficial, as is a sound understanding of the CDM Health & Safety legislation and specifically Designer responsibility

An MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering is preferable, Geotechnical and Mining degree backgrounds would also be considered and you will have Chartered status or working towards it with a recognised institution, such as the ICE.

A full UK driving licence is required.
