Bridge Supervisor | Tamar Bridge, Plymouth | Part Time | £22,454 per annum, inclusive of allowances, progressing to £25,306, based on 24 hrs per week

Our client is responsible for the management, operation, maintenance and administration of the two crossings over the River Tamar – Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry. With approx. 26,000 vehicles travelling with them every day, they play an important part in the local infrastructure, creating a link between Plymouth, Devon and South East Cornwall.

They seek to appoint a part time Bridge Supervisor to join the team at the Tamar Bridge. This is an exciting opportunity for a confident individual with good communication skills, to provide excellent customer service in a dynamic, and unique environment.

This role is a safety critical role and offers longer term opportunity for advancement within the bridge service and provides generous benefits.

The Bridge Supervisor team work to a 5 week cyclical rota which consists of early shifts (05:30 – 13:30) and late shifts (13:30 – 20:30), There are also training shifts within the rota cycle.  

We run a dynamic shift rota involving 11 members of staff and successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a high level of flexibility in the role to cover: sickness absence, annual leave and training within the team. This could include a variety of shifts, including weekday, weekend and night shifts. This may involve half or full shift cover, all cover and overtime is managed on fair basis.

Due to the safety critical nature of the roles, Bridge Supervisors are subject to random and for cause drugs and alcohol testing.

Basic IT skills (email and Office 365 packages)

Ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship amongst colleagues

Experience of:

Working in a customer service environment
Ability to write clearly and comprehensively
Attention to detail and good record keeping
Experience of working within general Policies and Procedures
What will your role look like?

Maintain a safe, effective and efficient A38 Tidal Flow Corridor (comprising of Tamar Bridge and A38 Saltash Tunnel), using a combination of visual surveillance and monitoring equipment to ensure correct traffic plans are appropriate to prevailing conditions, including: traffic flow dynamics, environmental factors, vehicle breakdowns or abnormal loads, incidents e.g. road traffic collisions, suspicious persons/packages, equipment failure, and maintenance – planned or emergency repairs  
Liaison and coordination of operations with multi-agency stakeholders, inc. National Highways, Emergency Services and local government
The safe, effective and efficient management of the Bridge toll plaza
Management and coordination of onsite Light Vehicle Recovery unit, ensuring welfare of occupants and efficient lane management
Ensure all operations carried out in accordance with health & safety legislation and internal procedures, ensuring staff under supervision fully understand the responsibilities placed on them to ensure a safe system of work is maintained
Monitoring, logging and responding to Bridge Intruder/Security or Fire alarm systems Assume role of Fire Warden to ensure correct evacuation and fire prevention measures are implemented. Primary liaison with emergency services
