Salary: £36,680.00 per annum (increasing to £40,000.00 per annum, once completed 3 years of service)
Permanent, Full time - 40 hours per week 

A brand-new contract, HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough is the UK’s first purpose-built, peer-led resettlement Prison. After opening in early 2022, it’s a one-of-a-kind new generation category C new build Prison for the future; The vision for HMP Five Wells is to set a gold standard for new build prisons of the future, using forward-thinking design and technology. 

Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) successfully manages 4 prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales. The philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe. 

We are looking for dedicated First Line Managers (FLM) to join our team. You may already have FLM experience within a custodial environment and are seeking a new challenge or you may currently hold the position of Prison (Custody) Officer and are ready for the next step in your career. You will be responsible for the efficient and effective day to day running of the operations; providing a secure and rehabilitative environment for prisoners, ensuring they receive all statutory rights in line with contractual obligations. Your role will be to manage the efficient and effective operation of allocated work areas to meet contractual and company requirements. To provide prisoners with a safe and decent environment that encourages rehabilitation. Manage the effective deployment of staff. 

Most importantly your role will be to provide professional advice, guidance and support to operational staff in order to maintain good order and discipline of the establishment. The FLM role is a crucial role for coaching, mentoring and developing Prison Custody Officers whilst offering hands-on support and motivation. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Provide a secure and safe environment in which prisoners receive all statutory rights in line with contractual obligations and company policies and procedures.
Coach and support staff to maximise their performance and ensure values, ethical standards, equality and diversity, policies and procedures including security instructions and contractual requirements are met including PDR’s and managing sickness absence.
Ensure all operational instructions and emergency procedures are adhered to in line with policy.
Manage the effective deployment of staff to ensure the security of the prison and meet operational requirements
Monitor the movement of all prisoners both internally and externally in an effective manner so as to maintain security at all times.
Monitor and implement the incentives Policy Framework Strategy.
Control and manage the use of Control & Restraint and other forms of restraint to ensure that correct procedures are followed.
Monitor and maintain control of all aspects of prison routines in order to meet contractual and legal requirements and security instructions ensuring all incidents are reported and managed correctly and documentation is completed accurately.
Coordinate all security and control measures within the prison in line with local security instructions ensuring that all staff are aware of their responsibilities so that the security of the prison is maintained.
Ensure prisoner spaces are maintained effectively and safely, maximise unit capacity & decency.
Attend meetings when required to do so representing allocated unit.
Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & following the applicable safe systems of work for the role.
