Job Description

Five Education are working with a mainstream primary school in Clevedon and are looking for an experienced Learning Support Assistant to work with children who have Autism and/or SEN (Special Educational Needs). They are looking for candidates who have experience supporting children with SEND, SEMH and/or SpLD.

You would be working within a Key Stage 1 class in which part of the children will have additional needs including challenging behaviour and Autism, SpLD (ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia). This role is due to start in September 2021 and is 5 days a week, full-time position.

It is a small school with a dedicated and supportive staff team. A high percentage of their SEND pupils are identified as having SEND linked to Cognition and Learning issues (including maths, reading, writing and spelling) and a large proportion are identified as having SEND linked to SEMH (including ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder, ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attachment Disorder and Anxiety).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Keeping the pupils engaged with their work
  • Supporting the children in the transition back to school after a considerable break
  • Using positive reinforcement to effectively support the children in the classroom and possibly around the school
  • Helping the children to develop literacy and numeracy skills
  • Communicating with parents/caregivers to maintain a consistent and informed approach
  • Helping the class teacher with differentiation so all pupils can access the curriculum
  • Supporting class teachers with maintaining good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
  • Helping children to develop self-regulation techniques, and learn when they need to employ them

Essential Criteria:

  • At least 12 months of experience working with children
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques such as those taught in Team Teach or MAPA courses
  • Adaptable and able to use your initiative
  • At least 12 months experience supporting children with SEND/ASD/SEMH
  • Have knowledge of Autism friendly approaches such as 'Now and Next’, Social Stories and PECS (Picture exchange communication system)
  • Knowledge of the Key Stage 1 curriculum is required
  • To maintain outstanding standards as monitored by OFSTED
  • Have a right to work in the UK (A Valid Visa)
  • Two recent child/vulnerable adult based references and relevant DBS/Police checks
  • Access to bicycle, car or near main bus routes.
  • Able to work 8.30-3.30, 5 days per week term time only

Five Education do not believe in using umbrella bodies, we use PAYE and how this isn’t comparable with umbrella body pay and that there is no admin fee as with Umbrella bodies and Five Education pay employers national insurance on top of the salary. Please note pay rate is for illustration and does include holiday pay.
