Job Description

Azure & AWS cloud Infrastructure experts required to shape and define cloud services in one of the UK’s largest major Government Departments

Your new company

The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is a major UK Government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment. From the food we eat and the air we breathe, to the water we drink, Defra plays a vitalrole in people’s everyday life. We work tirelessly to sustain a thriving rural economy and together we drive the success of our world-leading food and farming industry. Defra are embracing a 'Cloud First’ approach to our organisation’s evolution and we are in a period of exciting change, embracing Digital Services as a platform for continued transformation. As such, we require Azure and AWS cloud experts to join us in 'pod lead’ roles, managing a small technical group and helping to ensure technical delivery of pipeline of high-profile projects.

Your new role

You will take responsibility as a technical pod lead within our expansive cloud services team, managing up to 6 cloud infrastructure engineers. Together with colleagues across the group you will define, develop and deliver outstanding cloud solutions using Azure or AWS technology. As a technical team lead your time will be spent providing technical advisory and input on new solutions and projects, which could range from building hosted flood response systems from scratch, through to transitioning legacy environmental systems over to the cloud. Additionally, you’ll engage with a diverse stakeholder community and allocate work to your engineers in a highly Agile approach.

What you'll need to succeed

Your background will include cloud infrastructure engineering and systems implementation within similarly diverse enterprise organisations. Your deep knowledge of Ms Azure or AWS and related technologies will form the basis of your daily interactions with technical team members, leadership and hands-on with tech. Knowledge of infrastructure as code and CI/CD delivery processes will help you greatly in this role, however previous experience with similar enterprise delivery models and modern standards will provide you with a strong knowledge base to build upon. This role would perfectly suit a technical expert who wants to play a leading role in project delivery and enjoys mentoring and developing team members. We have a diverse and close-knit team with similar interests and goals, so a collaborative approach to work is key.

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Delivering at pace
  • Change and improving
  • Developing of self and others

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • IT Infrastructure (expert)
  • Technical understanding (expert)
  • Troubleshooting and problem resolution (expert)

What you'll get in return

Defra will continue working from home, and we support fully remote flexible working. However, if you would prefer to work from an office, our IT hubs are York, Warrington, Bristol and Reading. You’ll join Defra at an exciting time within a unique technical team which is involved in all of Defra’s technical initiatives.

Our exceptional benefits package includes 25 days of annual leave + 9 bank holidays, flexible working, a significant pension contribution of 20%+, flexi-benefits and mentoring and personal development opportunities. With specialist resource at your fingertips and an opportunity to really shape our IT practice, this is a chance to truly revolutionise how people in the UK understand, interact with and manage our natural environment.

We may offer an additional specialist pay supplement of up to £6,000 for candidates (including existing Civil Servants) who demonstrate a high level of capability during assessment.

In all cases the additional supplement is non-pensionable and the amount payable is subject to review at least annually and could be reduced or withdrawn at any time.
