Staffing work appropriately is critical to delivering efficiently for clients, ensuring profitability and retaining talent.The SFG practice is looking for a resource manager to help ensure that the team’s workload is balanced and diverse and that client work is staffed efficiently. The successful candidate will need to build strong relationships with all partners and lawyers within the group and develop a good understanding of the nature of the work being done. They will work to understand each team member’s capability, development needs and availability to ensure work is allocated appropriately and fairly and support a more efficient process for the allocation of work.Purpose At a functional level, the role will provide partners and matter managers across SFG with appropriate options to resource chargeable and non-chargeable work.  These options will consider availability and suitability as well as individuals’ own development goals.The Resource Manager will be required to:build strong relationships with all members of the group;understand the different types of work done by the group;understand the relevant business drivers;understand and track individuals’ capabilities, development goals and availability;work with other Capital Markets teams within London & Globally to help resource SFG mandates during busy periods,co-ordinate with other resource managers and partners around the firm to deploy excess capacity or meet high demand,develop tools and resources to manage capacity data efficiently and transparently;all with a view to ensuring work is allocated appropriately across the group, and to support a more efficient and effective process for the allocation of work.Key responsibilities Assist partners in staffing matters and team management by:Building strong empathetic working relationships across the practice. Proactively anticipating and understanding resourcing requirements.Identifying and then discussing with partners the most appropriate resources for all incoming work across the group, including associates, trainees, paralegals and contract lawyers.Advising partners on the appropriate staffing of a matter by weighing a number of considerations including capacity, skillset, business need, profitability and development needs.Actively monitoring resource requirements for ongoing work, anticipating and managing periods of increased/reduced busyness, holiday/illness/parental leave/leavers etc and ensuring these that these are considered as far in advance as possible and that the partners are steered towards the appropriate level of resource.Providing weekly management information including commentary to support the business in making key strategic decisions. Reporting on utilisation levels, challenges facing individuals or other relevant issues.Taking ownership of current resourcing procedures and enhancing these where appropriate.Challenge partners and encourage new ways of thinking around resource managersActively supports flexible working opportunities to help balance the diverse needs of the team.Support Associate development through:Engaging in regular discussions with the team around current and future capacity, providing a form of pastoral care to ensure team members that are particularly busy have the support they need.Escalating challenges or concerns of the team to the Resourcing/HR Partners and HR Manager where necessary.Regular discussions with the Resourcing/HR Partners on:work mix for individual team members, helping to manage the need to rotate on and off matters where relevantteam member objectives, work preferences and performance issuesvalidation of resourcing recommendations as requiredProvide feedback to team members directly and during the appraisal process.Using data and feedback to ensure that the group’s approach to resourcing reflects the value of diversity and the importance of an inclusive culture. Movers and joiners: Support the secondment process including staying in touch with secondees.Support the group in the integration of lateral hires through work allocation and ensuring they are embedded into the group.Support on work allocation for new joiners, NQs, parental leave and secondment returners; ensuring they have been allocated work prior to their arrival.Introduce new joiners and trainees to the work allocation process.Key other aspects of the Resource Managers role:Work closely with Legal Project Managers, alternative resourcing teams and the innovation function to make sure we are using roles, skills and technology in a smart way to resource matters optimally, in line with client preference as well as the firm’s commercial objectives.
