Pension Geeks - a recently acquired business by Aegon - are a market leading provider of services to employers consulting on the design of their member communications strategy and offering a range of solutions to support them. These solutions will be both integrated into the Aegon product offering and delivered to market as a stand-alone service.

Summary of Role:

We’re taking Pension Geeks to the next level and want to make more of an impact with our digital offering. We’re looking for a highly talented and creative Design Engineer to join our Pension Geeks team, who will establish, evolve, maintain and develop our web offering for a diverse range of customers.

You’ll be responsible for the development and implementation of our digital solutions and as such will have a strong passion for technology and writing great code. The role will require effective partnership with UI/UX Designers, other Design Engineers, Product Management and User Research. You will need to be adaptable to take on various projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Architecting and implementing new features, writing unit tests, solving complex problems, measuring and optimizing performance, ensuring stability, scalability, reusability and code quality and investigating new technologies.

  • Build new systems, products and digital solutions for our client base, and work on existing applications to create new functionality and enhance existing features.

  • Ensure all digital solutions have high performance on mobile, tablet and desktop web applications.

  • Work with the UX consultant and other team members to maintain UI/UX consistency in projects.

Key Tasks

  • Digital Standards: Assist the UX Consultant on the evolution and management of the UX/UI standards within Pension Geeks. Ensure all activity aligns with the required standards, including the various customer brands.

  • Architecting and Implementing: Provision and development of high quality fully functioning websites/portals/tools and apps. Ensuring digital products are compatible with different browsers and older browser versions and for various customer requirements. Measuring and optimizing performance, ensuring stability of all digital products.

  • Manage Workload: Track and proactively manage your UX backlog, taking accountability for your features. Follow agile methodologies at all times.

  • Collaborate: Work together with the wider Pension Geeks and Aegon team to successfully implement and execute digital products.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Ability to think in terms of systems, connecting and making relationships across multiple teams and experiences.

  • Mastery of HTML/CSS and their affordances and limitations.

  • Passion for designing digital products and experiences.

  • Self-disciplined, self-motivating and self-improving.

  • Be a strong team player that is able to work closely with others, but also comfortable working independently.

  • Effectively communicate and present complex conceptual thinking visually and verbally.

  • Understanding of marketing best practice principles and techniques in a multi-channel environment.

  • Understanding of best practice across other industries that can support the growth of Pension Geeks’s and Aegon’s strategies.

  • Understanding of the financial services sector and the associated customer demands and distribution dynamics is a bonus but not essential.

Experience:

  • A hands-on, strong working knowledge of interactive JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and Craft.

  • Experienced with using pre-processors such as SASS/LESS and architecting accordingly.

  • Knowledge of Atomic design principles and the use of appropriate naming conventions (e.g. BEM).

  • Experienced, detail-orientated engineer with strong knowledge of interaction and visual design as well as familiarity with information architecture.

  • Expert knowledge of creating accessibly compliant interfaces (WCAG) which are driven by semantic detail.

  • Experience working in the full lifecycle of Lean/Agile delivery model.

  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Good examples of previous work that demonstrate your skills.

Qualifications

  • Fantastic track record of Design Engineering for digital products.

  • Strong proven track record of designing products using a Design System.

  • Degree level qualification in a relevant subject.

Salary

Competitive salary dependent on experience from £39,520 to £49,400.
