Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer - Cambridge

TEC Partners are looking for an experienced Senior/Principal level Mechanical Engineer to design radio products, accessories and test systems. The successful candidate will be involved in the whole lifecycle of product development from technical specification through to design and verification, into product integration and mass production.

Working as part of a dynamic team of Mechanical Engineers and interfacing with other technical disciplines, main responsibilities will include:

  • Technical specification and design of Professional Mobile Radio equipment and accessory products
  • Assessing product requirements, defining concepts and detail design
  • Interfacing to Project and Product Management - reporting progress, issues and successes
  • Defining appropriate, cost-effective manufacturing techniques
  • Ensuring new product designs meet all the necessary requirements including defined mandatory standards, cosmetic standards, robustness testing and life testing
  • Detailed design and test documentation
  • Definition of product acceptance criteria and testing
  • Travel overseas to progress piece part manufacture and final product assemblies
  • Manufacturing requirements and test specification authoring
  • Technical support to end customers and subcontract manufacturers

Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:


  • Relevant degree (BSc/MSc/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering or similar experience in lieu of above


  • > 10 years' product development and manufacturing experience
  • Experience of electro-mechanical packaging (PBC housing, switches, buttons, PCB interconnects, LCDs)



  • Experienced 3D CAD use (Creo/Pro Engineer)
  • Professional Radio/TETRA/DMR/Mobile/Dect etc. Handset Design
  • Design for assembly and test
  • Demonstrable knowledge of thermal design for high density electronic packaging
  • Experience of specifying technical requirements and managing outsourced development
  • Sound knowledge of plastic injection moulding techniques and low-cost manufacturing
  • Sound materials and materials processing knowledge
  • A structured, proactive approach - numerically focussed
  • Customer (internal and external) focussed
  • A sound knowledge of tolerance analysis
  • Engineering process and control
  • The identification of project/design risks via the use of DFMEA


  • Touch screen interface design
  • Integrated antenna development
  • Experience of the use of simulation tools for both thermal and stress analysis
  • Ruggedised equipment design
  • Design for automotive installations
  • Design for Human Factors
  • Experience in Plastic Metallisation
  • Cast Metal Enclosure Design
