About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape GSK’s work on the Government’s Life Sciences agenda. The role will be based in the UK Corporate Government Affairs team, sitting in our Global Corporate Government Affairs & Policy team and working closely with colleagues across the business. It will have a particular focus on GSK’s innovation priorities and our relationships with UK Government, in a critical role helping to build a supportive environment for GSK’s R&D strategy.
The UK Corporate Government Affairs team has a unique role in bringing together GSK’s engagement with the UK government and key stakeholders, to optimise the operational environment in the UK in support of the company’s strategic priorities of Innovation, Performance and Trust and mindful of its position as a UK-headquartered global company. The team maintains key institutional relationships with government including with the Office for Life Sciences and the Life Sciences Council.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
This role will provide the opportunity to lead key activities and help shape the success of GSK. These responsibilities involve the following:
Develop and deliver effective advocacy plans for GSK’s R&D policy priorities in the UK, including data, genomics and clinical trials, coordinated with other GSK engagement. This will include supporting GSK input to relevant Government forums such as the National Genomics Board and the Life Sciences Council.
Provide a strong understanding of UK innovation and life sciences policy to help shape GSK’s overall Government Affairs strategy and engagement in the UK, leading for the team on delivery of the UK’s Life Sciences Vision and Innovation Strategy in particular, and any related initiatives or announcements. This will also support the Head of Global R&D Policy to help identify UK policy risks and opportunities for GSK.
Provide government affairs and stakeholder engagement support for our global R&D hub at Stevenage, in particular continuing to build support for plans we have developed, in partnership with local stakeholders, to grow Stevenage as a UK life sciences cluster.
Work with Global Tax team and relevant trade bodies to support engagement and policy input to UK Government on tax incentives for investment, aligned to the Government’s goal for the UK to reach 2.4% GDP invested in R&D.
Engagement and Advocacy
Work with the Head of UK Corporate Government Affairs to shape and be accountable for delivery of GSK’s engagement programme with UK Government and parliamentarians, including leading on all aspects of meeting and briefing management, working with agencies as needed. Includes GSK’s presence at party conferences.
Manage GSK’s relationship with the Office for Life Sciences.
Manage GSK’s relationship with the CBI.
Support GSK representatives on government forums with business, including the UK’s National Genomics Board, with briefings as required.
Demonstrable ability to deliver successful government relations and advocacy programmes.
Strong understanding of UK politics and policy-making processes.
Strong pharmaceutical policy understanding and experience.
Experience of working in a matrix organisation and/or a trade body, or otherwise managing complex stakeholder relationships.
