This well known manufacturer of bespoke mechanical assembly systems has a large established customer base in the UK manufacturing sector.
They wish to appoint a graduate trainee sales engineer to manage and grow an existing customer base in the South. The location of role will be home/ field based.
Full training will be given (the package includes base salary plus bonus and a fully expensed car - so you will need a current drivers licence). Our ideal candidate will be a mechanically oriented graduate engineer who is interested in business and people. No sales experience is needed however based on the profiles of people who have been successful with this company (they have been training graduate engineers for this role for over 10 years) it is quite likely that you have worked in a customer facing role in some capacity or be drawn to this type of role and also that you have an achievement oriented outlook and a general interest in manufacturing.
The role is focussed on developing a group of existing customers (no cold calling). These customers span a range of manufacturing vertical markets which include Automotive, Aerospace and white goods manufacturers and a number of others besides- many of these engineering businesses are household names.
Each project is specifically tailored to the customers requirement and every project is different. So you will never sell the same thing twice. For this reason we seek someone who has a good understanding of mechanical engineering principles as the customers you will be working with are engineers themselves and in order to make the sale you will need to firstly understand your customers desired outcome before being able to help them to problem solve and create a solution accordingly.
You won't be actually designing the solution - that is done by a separate team however you will be responsible for developing the technical specification with the customer and for managing each project on the customer side from project origination through to delivery.
As an engineer you will know what questions to ask in order to build a detailed profile of each customer requirement and hopefully ,make useful inputs towards a solution which will win the customer's order. The sales process is intrinsically consultative in nature so we are not seeking an aggressive pushy style of trainee but rather someone who is able to build strong lasting relationships founded on trust and the practicality of creating the best option for the customer. Indeed the company is strongly driven by the need to build and maintain excellent relationships with their customer base and the predominant focus of this role is account management because customers will often purchase multiple projects - a job well done therefore will usually mean that the customer will call you as soon as they have another project. Something which is obviously good for business.
