About the department
The abrdn Research Institute (aRI) publishes original research at the intersection of economics, policy and markets.
aRI was founded to encourage deep, long-term thought leadership across the firm. Its work complements asset price valuation frameworks and investment decisions, covering: forecasts, scenario analysis and fundamental research at the intersection of economics, politics, policy and markets.
aRI’s Research programme has six core streams:
Inflation, earnings and the business cycle;
Money, banking and credit;
Long-term growth and structural analysis;
Behavioural, quantitative and methodological frontiers;
Politics, policy and ESG; and
Long-term thematics and changing investment horizons
About the role
The senior political economist will conduct and lead high level, primary research and analysis relating to geopolitics, public policy and “macro” ESG themes.
They will contribute to the production and dissemination of high quality, investment-relevant research and analytical insights through a variety of publications and forums.
They will also engage with, and influence, a variety of internal and external stakeholders to help develop investment ideas, arrive at the best possible investment decisions, and raise the internal and external profile of abrdn.
Undertake deep, fundamental and original research relating to geopolitics, public policy and ESG.
Lead the outreach with government officials, academics, think tanks and international institutions related to geopolitics, public policy and ESG research.
Contribute papers, articles and other pieces of written work for aRI’s internal and external publications.
Deliver presentations and tailored content to current and prospective clients across a variety of market segments.
Clearly and concisely communicate aRI’s research and analytical insights to both clients and the media, through presentations, interviews and other means.
Proactively engage with colleagues in investment debates, to develop investment ideas and help arrive at the best possible investment decisions.
Manage junior members of aRI working on geopolitical, policy and ESG issues.
Act as a key liaison and coordination point with abrdn’s sustainability teams.
Act under the principles of Treating Customer Fairly and abide by all regulatory requirements; managing conflicts and risk, reporting errors on a timely basis.
Risk management and controls – be able to identify, assess, monitor, control and mitigate risks to the firm. Have an awareness and understanding of the main risks facing the firm and your role in managing them.
Financial analysis and controls – have the ability to identify, asses, monitor, control and mitigate risks to the firm. An awareness and understanding of the main risks facing the firm and your role in managing them.
Be aware of and understand the regulatory framework in which the company operates. Act with honesty and integrity at all times and observes proper standards of market conduct. When dealing with the FCA, PRA or other regulator is open and cooperative at all times
Skills & Experience
Ability to deliver original, impactful research and analytical insights through a range of publications, forums and media, adapted to different internal and external audiences.
Knowledge and understanding of academic research in relevant topics, as well as the ability to engage with and collaborate with academics and policymakers at a high level.
Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills, including experience with a range of research methods, as well as the ability to use them in original empirical work.
Strong knowledge of investment processes and financial markets as well as the ability to understand the interaction between geopolitics, public policy, ESG, economics and financial markets.
Ability to deliver thematic presentations to a range of clients in different countries, while communicating effectively with the media.
Strong team-playing skills, enabling effective relationships within a small team and other teams across abrdn.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner with minimal direct supervision, as well as act on behalf of the aRI’s Head and Chief Economist where necessary.
Ability to work within a complex business environment and gain the support and confidence of a wide variety of people.
Have the awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework in which the firm operates, as well as its regulatory requirements, while acting in an ethical manner with adherence to relevant rules and regulations.
Knowledge of TCF requirements and responsibilities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
A post-graduate degree in Politics, Public Policy, Economics or a related discipline.
Extensive experience in a role focused on geopolitical and/or public policy research and analysis.
Experience of applying research in an investment and financial market environment.
