Equal Opportunities

At Transport for Wales (TfW) we value diversity. It makes us stronger, helps us understand our customers better, make better decisions and be more innovative. Everyone’s different and has their own perspective so we’re building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve. Through this we’re determined to be one of Wales' leading inclusive employers. We’re creating an inclusive transport network that everyone in Wales can be proud of.

An exciting opportunity to join TfW as our Senior Economist to be the technical lead on transport economics, including taking account of environmental, socio-economic and wider economic impacts to build the case for transport investment in Wales, at both a strategic programme and individual scheme level and with a particular focus on rail investment.

Role responsibilities

You’ll provide technical advice and prepare the economic impact sections of business cases being developed by TfW and Network Rail by drawing on specialist economics knowledge to help make an informed case for transport investment in Wales.

You'll improve project and programme business cases by identifying the full range of potential wider economic benefits and considering the range of outcomes that may result from investment to maximise the chance of obtaining scheme funding.

You'll also provide technical advice on investment priorities across TfW and Network Rail in Wales by leading on economic appraisal work to monetise the environmental (carbon), health and wider economic benefits.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll need to have:

Chartered membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. IHT, ILT, ICE, TPP) or working towards chartership.
Demonstrable experience of delivering economic appraisal and wider economic impact assessment services to clients.
In-depth knowledge of using and interpreting economic data and terminology (relating to GVA, GDP, additionality, induced investment, agglomeration and cost-benefit appraisal).
Experience of undertaking cost-benefit appraisals across a range of projects.

Who we are

Transport for Wales (TfW) is the not-for-profit company driving forward the Welsh Government’s vision of a high-quality, safe, integrated, affordable and accessible transport network in Wales. Our mission is to ‘Keep Wales Moving’ by providing customer-focused service, expert advice and infrastructure investment.

Welsh Language Skills

The ability to speak Welsh would be a plus but is not essential for this role.

Please note, we reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications.
