Your new company
You will be working for HMP Swansea, located in the centre of Swansea near the beach. It is roughly a 20 minute walk from the train station. HMP Swansea is a local prison holding remand and sentenced prisoners. It is a category B/C men's prison and have a capacity of 300 inmates. You will be working within the industries area within the prison that helps facilitate vocational programs and skills for the inmates.
Your new role
You will be working in a production workshop specifically for multi-skill training. You will be teaching and supervising a number of inmates in a variety of skills such as plumbing, carpentry, painting & decorating etc. as well as CSCS training. Main duties include:
- Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop undertaking prisoner learning -need assessments
- Induct prisoners to the workshop and train them in aspects such as Health and Safety, Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH), machinery and tools usage
- Provide support for prisoners where required; tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs
- Maintain and update learner records including their Individual Learning Plan accordingly
-Assess and evaluate skills of prisoners including National Vocational Qualification levels 1 and 2 and other relevant industry recognised qualifications
This role is Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm. The pay rate is u00A314.59/h (inclusive of holiday pay). This is a 3 month long contract with an opportunity for it to be extended or offered a permanent position by the prison.
What you'll need to succeed
The ideal candidate must have previous experience working with trade-based skills (e.g. plumbing, carpentry etc.) and preferably experience with tutoring/teaching in any environment. Good listening and communication skills are a must. No formal teaching qualifications are required. It will be a two stage interview process and after a job offer, the candidate will be subject to a prison-specific security clearance procedure due to the nature of the role. Please bear in mind this can take 6-8 weeks to process.
