NJR Recruitment is delighted to be supporting a well-established and growing organisation in York in their search for a Finance & Payroll Assistant to join their collaborative finance team.
This is a varied and responsible opportunity within a supportive, smaller business environment, offering broad exposure across financial reporting, planning, payroll and core finance operations. The role will suit someone who enjoys taking ownership and wants to develop into a well-rounded finance professional rather than being confined to purely transactional duties.
Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will support reporting across two FCA-regulated entities and play a key role in ensuring the smooth and accurate delivery of finance processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Support financial reporting across two FCA-regulated entities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Assist with month-end, quarterly and year-end processes
- Maintain strong financial controls through journal postings and balance sheet reconciliations
- Reconcile income streams and work-in-progress schedules, investigating discrepancies
- Contribute to financial planning activities and performance monitoring
- Collaborate with HR and an outsourced payroll provider to ensure accurate payroll processing
- Take ownership of payroll change submissions, journals, holiday accrual maintenance and reconciliations to Sage 200
- Provide professional and discreet support for employee payroll queries
- Liaise with auditors and support compliance requirements
- Support and mentor a finance apprentice
- Identify opportunities to streamline and improve finance processes
About You
We are seeking a proactive and dependable finance professional who takes pride in delivering accurate work and meeting deadlines.
Skills & Experience:
- Payroll and accounting experience (AAT Level 4, or working towards, preferred)
- Strong Excel skills including Pivot Tables, SUMIF and VLOOKUP
- Highly organised with strong prioritisation skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Integrity and professionalism when handling confidential information
- Confident taking ownership of responsibilities
- Clear communicator with a collaborative approach
