Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Location: Manchester
Salary: £50,000 – £55,000 per annum
Type: Permanent
The Role We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Manchester-based water engineering team. You will be responsible for producing high-quality mechanical design solutions across a range of regulated water industry projects, from outline through to detailed design.
The role offers the opportunity to work across both clean water and wastewater schemes, supporting multi-disciplinary project teams and contributing to technically complex infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities - Produce mechanical design deliverables that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
- Prepare mechanical design calculations, drawings, investigations, reports, and specifications
- Ensure designs comply with relevant technical, professional, and group standards
- Direct, support, and develop CAD technicians
- Prepare scopes of work for subcontract M&E design teams and review their outputs
- Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, prepare technical specifications, and review tender submissions
- Manage and record design changes in line with formal processes and procedures
- Estimate design hours and support project planning activities
- Attend and present at design reviews, project meetings, and client presentations
Required Qualifications & Experience - Minimum 5 years’ mechanical design experience within the UK regulated water industry
- Degree, HND, or equivalent experience (including progression from Technician level)
- Strong IT skills and experience using engineering design tools
- Registered with a relevant professional body and working towards Chartership
Preferred Qualifications & Experience - Chartered Engineer (or working towards chartership)
- Experience in hydraulic design
- Experience delivering UMON schemes
- Experience across clean water and wastewater, infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects
- Awareness of construction methods, materials, and buildability
- Strong knowledge of engineering drawing practices
